Dr. Mehtap Işık: "The harm of the informal economy to the environment far exceeds the mathematical totals"

Informal economic activities harm not only the economy but also the environment. Bogazici University faculty member Mehtap Işık, who studies the environmental effects of the informal economy, says that even the informal economic activities of small-scale businesses cause irreversible destruction over time. Touching on the illegal waste imports in his research, Işık adds, "Many garbage and waste that enters Turkey illegally are not even used as raw materials and do not enter the circular economy."
